Mō Tatou (About Us)

Te Kōhanga Reo o Mataatua ki Mangere, opened its doors on the 17th January 1983, in the Wharenui (Awanuiarangi) at Mataatua Marae. The second Kōhanga Reo to be established in Tāmaki-Makaurau alongside Hoani Waititi Marae.

During the opening year, a relocatable classroom was positioned onto the grounds. Moving the growing roopu from Awanuiarangi into its present location.

With increasing numbers, the whānau found it essential to establish a total immersion Programme for Primary aged tamariki. In 1985, a second relocatable classroom was situated. This would lead to the opening of: Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Mangere.

In 1995, 41 tamariki were enrolled, with a waiting list of 40. A need for more learning space was required to facilitate the growing interest.

Te Kōhanga Reo o Mataatua ki Mangere have welcomed many Kaiako, Kaimahi and Whānau members. Instrumental to the creation and success of this Kōhanga.

We acknowledge all that remain and in particular, those who have passed on. They have left their mark on the Kōhanga Reo movement, handing down an enduring taonga for generations to come.
